"In my younger years, I primarily worked with colored pencils, but I wanted to create something on canvas that felt more 'legitimate.' To me, oil paint has the distinction of being the medium associated with masterpieces by artists like Leonardo and other works found in old-world museums," Aaron shares.

  • Richard Simpson

I've been serious about art since 10th grade, when I started sketching abstract drawings. My English teacher saw one of my art projects and encouraged me to try working on canvas. I didn’t start using canvas until after I graduated, but I remember my late dad always persuading me to follow what felt right.

I create abstract pieces of unusual things, mixing contemporary pop culture with texture mediums. I mostly do portraits, landscapes, and things that are out of the ordinary. My art is a way to express my thoughts and feelings, spreading messages of unity, inclusion, and hope—hope is what keeps me going.

I use materials like old magazines, string, cut-up cloth, stencils, and rocks, layering them with acrylic paint and glue on a gessoed canvas. With a palette knife, I scrape through multiple colors to create my pieces. Inclusion, hope, and freedom of expression mean the most to me. As someone who was bullied for being different, I want to show people they’re not alone. I believe in second chances and that if I can turn the world upside down with my art, others can find the courage to do the same.

I’m inspired by artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Pollock, and Dali, along with nature, movies, and current events. Art has given me a voice I didn’t know I had, and I hope my work helps others find theirs too.
